13 June Yangrou chuan and Tsingtao An afternoon and evening of Chinese food in China: meat eating and drinking beer, a normal combination and pastime of many young Chinese during the summer time. There are times when one feels that they need to take a break from their normal busy lives and have some down time. Over one weekend in Beijing, some of our older participants who are taking the Chinese language classes as well as our volunteer in Beijing program were eager for a Chinese style relaxation time. For many young people in China, the easiest option is to go to an outdoor restaurant and have meat kebabs (yangrou chuan) washed down with China’s famous brew of Tsingtao beer. Young GAC staff members headed out with these participants to enjoy a nice evening out in Beijing. As a foreigner I can relate to how nice it is to take a break from intense Chinese language study when you are studying it for around 6 hours a day. So this was a great yet simple way of relieving stress while getting to know other people that also came to Beijing through GAC sponsored programs. Many stories were told, the evening was filled with laughter, there were comparisons about who was living in a nicer apartment or what it’s like for those staying with a Chinese host family etc. It is during moments like these that a person wishes that Monday cannot come because Monday means getting back to a busy routine.
