23 Sep Volunteering in Beijing Applicants looking for charity efforts can join Go Abroad China’s volunteer in Beijing program like our recent candidate Sirena Adessa from the USA. Volunteering is a great choice for participants looking for an opportunity to give back to a community abroad. For our participant Sirena, her days were filled with teaching basic English to kindergarten kids who originally come from poorer families. She also helped out with their meal times, games/ playing sessions and nap times. Working together with other Chinese coworkers and care givers was an opportunity to practice her spoken Chinese, her involvement provided encouragement and inspiration particularly for the children. GAC’s volunteering options generally include being placed at an orphanage for small kids in Beijing, working with children who have got physical disabilities and other mental disabilities such as those suffering from severe autism and have been placed in care homes. Other opportunities are present in working at a primary school for under privileged children; they are usually kids of migrant workers who have left their far-away homes in other provinces and come to Beijing to search for work. Volunteering work gets our participants out of their comfort zone considering the language and day to day activities at the volunteering places. So because of this, we also encourage them to learn Mandarin in Beijing to help them with basic, daily things. Usually we arrange a Chinese Mandarin School or private lessons for volunteering participants. Other foreign participants who enjoy this meaningful experience of volunteering have been people with a background in social work, NGO activities or individuals who take some time off from their normal lives to give back to the community in a foreign country! In China especially, volunteering in association with Go Abroad China can be done concurrently with a Mandarin Language course or travelling pursuits.
