20 Dec Beijing Meet Up Meetup is the world’s largest network system where local groups arrange to literally meet up face to face for activities and social gatherings. Meetup is international; whichever country you are in there is probably a website that is specifically for that country’s local groups. This is true for China too. Lets see what Mandarin Beijing enthusiats get up to: Meetup allows for individuals to socialize, plan activities, attend special meetings, seminars etc. At Go Abroad China we prepared to join one of the meetups together with our participants who are learning Mandarin in Beijing, and our volunteer in Beijing client for a breath of fresh air. With a galore of activity groups to join, we decided to be part of the group that would be spending the afternoon networking in the city. Networking means to create connections with like-minded people to exchange ideas, share opinions, share tips for example about the best way to learn Chinese particularly amongst foreigners. Although a large part of meetups is centered on fun, social activities and getting people active. However, there is also an element that tackles serious issues. Other meetup groups mobilize movements of people to bring about positive change in their living areas like establishing a neighborhood watch, cleaning the environment, church groups, volunteering efforts and many more. This becomes influential enough to bring about positive change in the issues that they may face. Other groups can be focused on careers; groups that I have seen include foreigners looking for opportunities in China; some may be researching China study abroad programs, available work positions, internships in China and many more. Meetup has proven to be a very useful platform for connecting people and communities. See plenty more of what Go Abroad China participants are up to here.
